and therapy in paediatric diseases

Interventional radiology (IR)

Minimally invasive diagnostic or therapeutic procedures using imaging guidancE

At Pediatric Interventional Radiology, we understand that medical procedures can be daunting for both children and their families. That’s why we emphasize a family-centered approach, ensuring clear communication, emotional support, and a comforting environment throughout the treatment process. Our goal is to make each experience as smooth and stress-free as possible, helping your child return to their daily activities with confidence and health.

Paediatric Interventional Radiology (PIR)

Welcome to IR4Kids, Paediatric Interventional Radiology where advanced imaging meets compassionate pediatric care. Our mission is to provide minimally invasive, image-guided treatments tailored specifically for infants, children, and adolescents. By utilizing state-of-the-art technologies such as ultrasound, fluoroscopy, and CT scans, we aim to reduce the need for traditional surgery, resulting in less pain, quicker recovery times, and minimal scarring for our young patients.

Our team of specialized pediatric interventional radiologists is trained to address a wide range of conditions, including vascular anomalies, organ malformations, and other complex medical issues. Through procedures like catheter placements, biopsies, and targeted therapies, we offer effective solutions that prioritize the well-being and comfort of your child. Each treatment plan is carefully crafted in collaboration with families and referring physicians to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Dr S Murthy Chennapragada

Dr S Murthy Chennapragada is a paediatric and interventional radiologist with the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (Westmead), NSW, Australia. He obtained his Paediatric radiology fellowship training at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead before completing a Vascular and Interventional Radiology Fellowship at the University Health Network, University of Toronto, Canada. His main areas of interest are paediatric hepatobiliary imaging, paediatric transplant related imaging and interventions, and vascular paediatric IR. He is a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), the Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR), the Asian and Oceanic Society for Paediatric Radiology (AOSPR) and is nominated to the Board of Directors for the Society of Paediatric Interventional Radiology (SPIR). He is a member of the RSNA Regional Committee for Asia/Oceania and is a section editor for Journal of Clinical and Interventional Radiology.

Benefits of Interventional Radiology

Minimally invasive

Pediatric Interventional Radiology (PIR) is a highly specialized field of medical imaging and minimally invasive treatment designed specifically for children. PIR offers a safe, effective, and less invasive alternative to surgery for many medical conditions in children.

Quality Treatment

Utilizing advanced imaging technologies such as ultrasound, CT, MRI, and fluoroscopy, pediatric interventional radiologists perform image-guided procedures that are less invasive than traditional surgeries, reducing the risks and recovery times for young patients. PIR provides children with high-quality treatments that result in better outcomes.

Short Surgery Times

PIR uses tiny incisions, leading to shorter surgery times, hence shorter recovery times, reduced risk of infections, less scarring, and reduced pain compared to open surgeries. Many PIR procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, minimizing hospital stays and improving the overall patient experience.

Fast Recovery

An effective alternative to traditional surgical procedures, often resulting in less pain, lower risk, and faster recovery for patients. Children generally recover more quickly from minimally invasive procedures, allowing them to return to their normal activities faster.

Interventional Radiology Procedures

Angioplasty

Angioplasty and vascular stenting are procedures often used to treat peripheral artery disease. These procedures involve using a balloon to widen a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel, and if necessary, placing a stent to keep the vessel open.

Embolization

These are targeted therapies for liver cancer that deliver high doses of chemotherapy or radiation directly to the tumor while sparing healthy tissue. These procedures can be less harmful than systemic treatments and may provide a better quality of life for patients.

Biopsy

Biopsies involve removing a small sample of tissue for examination under a microscope. Using imaging guidance, interventional radiologists can perform biopsies of various organs with high precision, often through a tiny incision.

Abscess Drinage

Using imaging guidance to drain fluid collections in the body, Removing objects that have been accidentally ingested or introduced into the body. minimizing infection and promoting healing.
